Approaching Intertextuality

Timeline/Diary Check

Trends in current Music Videos

Trends in current Music Videos

In order to back up the result I had received from my questionnaire, I carried out my own research to find out the current top music videos watched on MTV Charts. This allowed me to gain the knowledge of which types of music videos are popular amongst people. Not that it is a coincidence but the top 5 music videos which appeared on MTV Charts are all within the R&B/Hip Hop industry. Finding out this information gave me the idea to watch each of these music videos to see if there where anything similar such as conventions or clothing of the artist.

·         Chris brown gold rings
·         Trey songs you mine
·         Main Pepsi 2 Macklemore
·         Trini dem girls/the night is still young/ bad blood Nicki Minaj
·         Justin Bieber what do you mean

I then watched Justin Bieber’s music video and saw that he had used a different approach for his music video. In order to attraction more of his audience’s attention, throughout his music video he had performed the song in a studio with a plain white background. The production company then printed screenshots of his performance and set up small outlets in order for his fans to draw on each picture and then later on these photos over each other.

Throughout the music video, Justin Bieber facial expressions were kept sad in order to emphasise as well as relate to the lyrics’ of the song. The music video mainly consists of shots such as medium and close up, this enables the audience to relate and also feel what he is feeling from the close view of his face.

The music video was completely filmed from within a studio set apart from the short clips here and there of the fans actually drawing on each picture. This is a convection that most artists use during their music video. Filming the artist somehow interacting with fans as well as the fans show their feeling towards the artist, allows the audience to connote a sense of appreciation as well as being a part of the music video in some way.

Artists in 'SOUL PRODUCTION'

My Production Company

Narrative Filming

Narrative Filming

Besides the singing parts that I’ll be recording in my music video, I wanted to film my artists walking around with various shots such as medium shots. This way my music video will be able to tell a story along with the music. Me and my artist went to Brixton market in order to get some shots of her walking around and looking at various cloths and food.

In order to suit the genre and upbeat rhythm of my chosen song I wanted to film on a specific day when the sun was really bright. Since I am used to travel around Brixton I know that Brixton sell a variety of products of bright and different colours and so I wanted me the different colours to represent the different cultures that are in the area.

Reflection of Research

Change of Plans

Change of Plans

Due to most of the actors that I was planning on using for my music video having different plans and times being free, so I decided to change my music video slightly. Instead of having my artist hanging around with her friends, she’ll be by herself most of the time during the video. I was not quite sure on whether her friends will feature, for example to video her at her house for a while in the middle, or just to not have them feature. This has slightly changed my timetable on which I was planning on shooting my music video on certain days before editing. I will still be going through with the locations as well as the outfits that I have already chosen for the artist to be filmed in.

Moodboard

Moodboard

Instead of creating a picture for my mood board I decided to create a tumblr page which will allow me to upload pictures as I go of what will give me some inspiration for my music video. These pictures consist of locations of where my music video will be shot as well as artist which I based my own artist on.

Organisation of Actors

Organisation of Actors

Organising my actor was quite simple considering that my only actor would be my artist performing in the music video. In order to keep my artist up to date will my plans and schedules with planning, I decided to make a group chat with her. This way both of us are able to keep each other informed when it comes to anything that would be coming up. This is evident when I had made a group chat with my other two actors that were going to feature, which allowed me to gain the knowledge of them not being available to do the music video in advance, and therefore allowed me to change my plans ahead of time.

I was also able to take advantage of social media through the ‘Whatsapp Group chat I had made, by using Instagram when it came to choosing appropriate clothing for my artist. Through using the social media we were also able to communicate with each other by ‘@’ each other under each picture of clothing in order for my model to comment on whether she would think this would fit under the conventions of R&B/Hip Hop genre.

My Locations

Location

Choosing the locations to shoot my music video, I kept in mind the 5 key aspects of a music video from Andrew Goodwin’s theory, emphasising on my artist’s star image and. The image I was trying to create for Tyla is someone whose always wearing the latest cloth trends and has all the nice shoes that all of the fans want to buy. But at the same time didn’t have the same upbringing as most of them.

I decided to use one for my friend’s rooms as one location, being small with little room to do much, allows the audience to connote the idea of the artist not starting her career with much. And so starting my music video off with Tyla in her room not only shows the audience of her personal life but is also an example of intertextuality from an artist called Dej Loaf who is also a rapper/singer.

I also decided to film at Erith Prier in order to film Tyla looking out into the view. Filming whilst the sun was just coming upwas something I was keen on filming, this way the shots will appear more emotional, linked in with Tyla’s’ facial expressions should hopefully allow the audience to listen to the lyrics better as well as relate to them.

The last location in my music video would be of Tyla walking around Brixton’s market as well as its high streets. I wanted the audience to feel as if they were getting a behind scenes/reality video of Tyla’s life. The audience would be able to feel as if the artist is showing them a different side of their personality, without the studio settings and lights everything appears real.

Email from Atlantic Records

Atlantic Records Email

In order to actually use Kehlani’s song ‘Unconditional’, I sent an email to the Atlantic Records company to get their approval. In the email I just explained why and what I would be using the song for, as well as those who would be seeing the finished product.

2nd Outfit Choice

My 2nd Outfit Choice

When it came to my second outfit choice I wanted something that is more outgoing and fits the ’typical’ conventions of an R&B/Hip Hop female artist. Starting with the shoes, I decided to choose these pair of boots as it connotes that she’s going out to a party or a club. However in my artist’s situation she actually won't be going out to any special occasion. I researched and watch various music videos and noticed that most of the artist who aren’t going out to parties, but just hanging out with their friends are still dressed up to impress. This would also be the reason for the outfit as a whole. R&B/Hip Hop consists of showing power and wealth in any way possible, and one of these approaches would be through the way they dress. I therefore decided to add the leather jacket to this outfit to help emphasise the artist power, making her seem more dominant. I also found out that those within the
industry and are female are known for showing some skin. For this reason I didn't want my model to feel too uncomfortable, so I therefore decided to choose a crop top for her. Therefore making her seems more ‘sexy’ in a way, as well as suiting the conventions for the Male Gaze.
